He joined the Army in 1914, learning of his award of a Fellowship at Trinity while in the Dardanelles. Wounded on the Somme, he returned to Trinity and served successively as Junior Dean, Junior Bursar, Tutor, Senior Tutor, and, after ordination in 1941, as Dean of Chapel.
