She is the daughter of the late Louisiana author Mary Alice Fontenot, with whom she collaborated on numerous projects, including writing the music, lyrics, and piano arrangements for several books in the Clovis Crawfish series. In addition to English, Landry speaks and writes the French of her Acadian ancestors and translates from one to the other, notably in the Clovis Crawfish series. She was awarded the CODOFIL prize for French prose in 1995.
